This elegant Chinese flower stand has a very slim profile making it perfect for a smaller room or hallway. It is made from hongmu, a Chinese hardwood and has delicate hoof feet and a beautiful openwork molded spandrel below the apron depicting opposing Makaras, legendary elephant trunked sea creatures.
This style of square Chinese flower stand was very popular at the end of the Qing dynasty (1644 - 1912) during the early 20th century. This example is a later copy made in the 1960's.
A similar earlier example can be found on page 169 of "Classic Chinese Furniture of The Qing Dynasty" by Tian Jiaqing (Fig. 71).
